The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr. Shafic Suleman, on April 5, 2025, inspected the Commission’s mechanised and hand-pump boreholes within the Adansi North District, under the Fomena Municipality in the Ashanti Region.
In 2024, the Commission’s Pro-Poor water support program, which is aimed at providing potable drinking water to water stressed communities in the country was extended to cover twenty-eight (28) communities under seven (7) different districts in the Fomena Municipality. The beneficiary districts are Adansi North, Adansi Asokwa, Adansi South, Amansie Central, Asante Akim central, Kwabre East and Atwima Mponua. These districts benefited from twenty-six (26) mechanized boreholes and two (2) hand pump boreholes.
The mechanized boreholes come with a 10,000-liter overhead tank with two (2) low taps and two overhead taps which serve a population of approximately 80,000 people in the twenty-eight (28) communities, while the hand-pump bore-holes serve a little over 5,000 inhabitants.
According to Dr. Suleman, these Pro-poor water projects align with PURC's mission to regulate water utility service providers in the delivery of water services and to protect stakeholders' interests in Ghana. He indicated that the Commission's efforts in water service delivery is focused on providing sustainable utility services, including access to clean water, to support Ghana's development.
Dr. Suleman was impressed to hear from residents that “the initiative is a major relief to our communities, which have long struggled with a lack of access to potable water.” For years, residents had no reliable source of clean drinking water, forcing them to rely on unsafe alternatives. The Executive Secretary pleaded with the communities to cultivate a proper maintenance culture for the sustenance of the projects.
