PURC Hands Over Four Mechanised Borehole Systems to The Abura Aseibu Kwamankese District in The Central Region

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has handed over four (4) fully funded mechanized boreholes to residents in four (4) communities namely; Abakrampa, Nkwantanan, Esssandohkrom, and Kwakuetu within the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District, Central Region on October 8, 2024. This initiative is part of the Commission’s efforts to assist with the provision safe drinking water to communities without access to potable water.

The project consists of a mechanized borehole, a 10,000-liter storage capacity, two (2) standpipes, and two (2) overhead pipes in each community. This is expected to serve an estimated 1,500 residents who mostly depend on streams for their daily activities.

The Commission officially handed over the completed projects to the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District through the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Willey Evans Obiri Awuah in a short ceremony with some members of the community, a representative from Ghana Water Limited (GWL) led by the Regional Chief Manager, Seth Eric Atiapah, and a team from the PURC.

The DCE on behalf of the communities expressed his appreciation for the Commission’s assistance in ensuring that residents have access to potable drinking water, which was a major challenge in the communities.

The chiefs and elders in all the communities expressed their gratitude to the Commission for intervening to curtail the health implications associated with the consumption of unwholesome water.

Residents of Nkwantanan also conveyed their appreciation for the extensive help the project has been to the community, especially the Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facility. In a conversation, a nurse at the facility recounted frequently reported cases of cholera, typhoid, and other diseases due to the consumption of unwholesome water from their only source of water, a nearby stream. She emphasized that such cases have drastically reduced with the establishment of the water project.

Opinion leaders in all the communities have pledged their support to put in measures to maintain the project for sustainability.
