PURC Mechanised Borehole Serves Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) in the Central Region

The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr. Shafic Suleman, on Thursday, April 17, 2025, inspected the Commission’s mechanised boreholes at Nkwantanan and Abakrampa, within the Abura/Asebu/Kwamankese District, of the Central Region of Ghana.

The mechanised boreholes come with a 10,000-litre overhead tank with three (3) low taps and one overhead tap, serving approximately 40,000 people in various communities. These pro-poor water projects align with PURC's mission to regulate water utility service providers in the delivery of water services and to protect stakeholders' interests in Ghana.

Dr. Shafic was impressed that Nkwantanan, the community chief, had taken over supervisory control of the project, which was serving the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, which helped in health service delivery in the Community.

Dr. Shafic thanked Nana Apiadu III, the Chief, greatly for the priceless service rendered for the sustainability of the project. He indicated that the Commission's efforts in water service delivery are focused on providing sustainable utility services, including access to clean water, to support Ghana's development.

The Chief (Nana Apiadu III) indicated that the project was strategically placed at a CHPS Compound to aid the operations of the health facility. “Also, the availability of water within the community has led to the retention of teachers and national service personnel in the community, unlike before, when there was no source of potable water”. “I plead for an extra pro-poor project to be added to the existing one to serve their growing population”.

Dr. Shafic, also on Saturday, 12th April 2025, visited pro-poor sites – at Nkran, Ahanta Abaasa and Apremdo - as part of the tour of the Western and Central Regions.
