PURC Calls for Collaboration Between Utility Service Providers and the University of Cape Coast

The Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, and a team of the Commission's management and staff conducted a working visit to the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The aim of the visit was to learn at firsthand, the electricity and water situation on the University campus. The Executive Secretary called for collaboration between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and Management of the University to help improve the quality of service on campus.

Dr. Suleman indicated that the visit was to improve on utility services provisions, as well as challenges that need to be addressed for UCC, as the largest educational hub in the region. “PURC is ever willing to provide UCC with all the assistance it requires to ensure quality of service, be it technical advice, research support, or any other requirement that may lie in the domain of regulation”.

Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto expressed his delight and pledged his full support for such collaborative initiatives between Academia and various key stakeholders. He added that the establishment of a research lab through the research support will stimulate academic work, however, much emphasis should be given to post-graduate students and females.

Professor Aheto explained that the power supply situation on campus was not the best, and urged ECG to resolve the problem promptly as it is affecting academic work. He pleaded with ECG to adopt a more cordial approach to its revenue mobilization exercises given that UCC is one of the largest clients of ECG within the Metropolis. “The University is open to a collaborative dialogue on devising a favourable payment schedule for our billings”, he said. Professor Aheto further indicated that in the case of water services delivery, there exists a cordial relationship between UCC and GWL, although this relationship can be improved on.

The Director for Regional Operations and Consumer Services of PURC, Alhaji Jabaru Abukari, advised ECG to continue improving on their customer relationship with their customers, clarifying that the indebtedness of a public institution to ECG does not have to go to the extent of ruining a professional relationship.

The Director for Energy Services and Performance Management of PURC, Ing. Frederick Oblitey, encouraged UCC to take up renewable alternatives and energy conservation strides on campus to reduce inflated power consumption.
