PURC Executive Secretary Visits Pro-Poor Water Sites

The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr. Shafic Suleman on March 13, 2025, inspected the Commission’s Mechanised boreholes within the Nandom Municipality in the Upper West Region.

On November 29, 2024, the PURC handed over four mechanised boreholes to residents of four (4) Communities in the Nandom Municipality. The beneficiary communities are Kogli, Naapaal, Goziiri, and Zogpiel. Each borehole consists of a 10,000-liter overhead tank, three (3) standpipes, and two overhead pipes. The projects are expected to serve aapproximately one thousand three hundred (1,300) residents at Kogle, one thousand two hundred and fifty (1,250) residents at Naapaal, seven hundred and fifty (750) residents at Goziiri and seven hundred (700) residents at Zogpielli. These communities mostly depend on dugout wells, streams, and dams as their sources of daily water use.

According to Dr. Suleman, these Pro-poor water projects align with PURC's mission to regulate utility services, in the delivery of water services, and to protect stakeholders' interests. The Commission's efforts focus on providing sustainable utility services, including access to clean water, to support Ghana's development.

Dr. Suleman was impressed to hear from residents that, “the initiative is a major relief to our communities, which have long struggled with a lack of access to potable water.” For years, residents had no reliable source of clean drinking water, forcing them to rely on unsafe alternatives. The Executive Secretary pleaded with the communities to cultivate a proper maintenance culture for the sustenance of the projects.
