As part of efforts to engage stakeholders and the general public, the Central Regional Office of PURC interacted with fresh students of the Cape Coast Nurses and Midwifery Training College (CCNMTC) during their orientation program. The annual lecture, incorporated into the school’s academic calendar since 2021, is aimed at educating new students on the roles of the Commission in addition to the complaint’s procedure, consumer rights and responsibilities as well as energy and water conservation tips.
This initiative was designed in collaboration with the institution to equip students with the requisite knowledge on the effective use of water and electricity during their stay on campus. This, according to the school authorities, has significantly reduced their expenditure on water and electricity bills.
This year’s lecture introduced the PURC Electricity Consumption Estimator (PECE) and Tariff Reckoner apps to the students. The objective for the creation of the apps was to help consumers estimate their monthly electricity and water consumptions in volumes (kWh OR M3) and convert them into monetary terms (GHS) and vice versa. A special feature on the Electricity Consumption Estimator is the display of electrical appliances which assisted in determining monthly electricity bills in both kWh and GHS which enables consumers to determine high consuming gadgets within a month. The regional team further conducted a practical demonstration on the use of the apps with the active participation of both students and staff.
The participants were delighted with the initiative of the Commission to help them estimate their consumption or identify anomalies in their bills. Additionally, the introduction of the PECE would help them regulate their energy consumption in their homes and the institution at large.
A total of eight hundred and fifty-eight (858) students, and six (6) tutors were engaged during the program.
