
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on October 24, 2024, handed over four (4) fully mechanized borehole systems to residents of four (4) communities in the Sene West District of the Bono East Region.
The beneficiary communities are Kyeamkrom, Kofi Gyan, Lemu, and Shafa. The project consists of a mechanized borehole, a 10,000-liter storage capacity, three (3) standpipes, and one (1) overhead pipe in each community.
The project will serve four thousand five hundred and fifteen (4,515) residents in Kyeamekrom and eight thousand two hundred and ninety-nine (8,299) residents in Lemu. It will also serve one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine (1,299) residents in Kofi Gyan, and four hundred and ninety-one (491) residents in the Shafa community. In all, the project will serve fourteen thousand six hundred and four (14,604) residents in the four (4) communities who mostly depend on streams and dams as sources of daily water use.
The Commission officially handed over the completed projects to the Sene West District Assembly through the District Chief Executive (DCE), represented by the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Braimah Sakuru. Present at the handing over ceremony were members of the beneficiary communities, a representative from Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and a team from the Bono East regional office of PURC.
Mr. Braimah Sakuru, expressed appreciation to the Commission for assisting the communities to have access to potable drinking water. He noted that, the projects will go a long way to help residents in their daily lives and to nationally contribute to Ghana’s efforts in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), Goal 6 which talks about ‘ensuring access to water and sanitation for all by 2030’.
The chiefs, opinion leaders, and people in all the beneficiary communities expressed their gratitude to the Commission for intervening in their lives with potable drinking water, which will have a positive impact on their health. In the words of a resident, ‘water is life, so we are grateful for the intervention. In the past we shared water with crocodiles and cattle’.
The Assembly member for the Lemu Kasamenti Electoral Area, Hon. Solomon Chaa, expressed joy over the project. He praised the Commission and its partners for the initiative and appealed for more of such projects to cover other communities. He urged the residents to put the projects to good use to serve its intended purpose.
