Asante Akim Central Takes Delivery of Four Mechanised Boreholes Under the PURC Pro-poor Initiative

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission on October 31, 2024, handed over three mechanized boreholes to two beneficiaries in the Asante Akim Central Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region.

The beneficiaries include the Konongo-Odumase Senior High School and SDA Senior High School at Petrensa. The Konongo-Odumase Senior High School benefitted from two mechanized boreholes, while the SDA Senior High School at Petrensa benefitted from one mechanized borehole.

Each of the mechanized boreholes has a 10,000 litre Overhead Tank with two low taps and two overhead taps serving a student population of over 3,000 at Konongo-Odumase Senior High School and approximately 1000 student population at the Petrensa SDA Senior High School.

In a short ceremony held at the Konongo-Odumase Senior High School, the regional office of the Commission in conjunction with Ghana Water Limited (GWL) represented by Mr. Justin Navelle, the officer in charge of the Low-Income Support Department of GWL in the Ashanti North Region, handed over the projects to the beneficiary communities in the presence of the Municipal Chief Executive – Hon. Yaw Kwakye.

Mr. Frank Agyekumhene, Senior Complaints Officer at the PURC, called on management and students of the schools to take proper care of the project to curb the water shortage crisis in the school. He further, advised the students to employ a positive maintenance culture, as the Commission is looking forward to undertaking more of such projects in communities and institutions where the maintenance culture is held in high esteem.

Mr. Justin Navelle in his remarks thanked the Commission for always collaborating with Ghana Water Limited and funding the Pro-poor water projects across the country. He assured the beneficiaries of Ghana Water Limited’s commitment to ensuring that Ghanaians at large have access to clean and safe drinking water, irrespective of their location or community. The students were educated on some water conservation and cleanliness tips.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Yaw Kwakye commended the PURC for the provision of safe and clean drinking water to deprived communities in the country through its Propoor water projects. He was full of praise for the Commission for undertaking these projects beyond its tariff-setting mandate.

The Headmaster of the Konongo-Odumase Senior High School, Benjamin Kwaku Baah also expressed the school’s gratitude to the Commission.
