2019 Tariff Review Process: PURC Discusses Tariff Proposals with Utility Service Providers (8/10/2018)

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) met with Officials of the Utility Service Providers on 3rd October, 2018 at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, Accra. This meeting was about the 2019 Electricity and Water Major Tariff Review and was chaired by Mr. Ishmael Edjekumhene, Chairman of the Technical Committee of PURC. As part of this exercise, the PURC took the Public Utilities through the templates it had developed for filing of proposals and also the tariff review schedule.

In accordance with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538), the Commission receives and examines tariff proposals from the utility service providers in order to arrive at a tariff decision.  In line with this, the Commission designed a tariff proposal template to be used in presenting the tariff proposals. This was to ensure that the proposals were presented in a consistent manner by the utility service providers for efficient examination.

As part of the 2019 Major Tariff Review process, the Commission deemed it necessary to update the tariff proposal template and include additional information requirements that is vital in determining the approved tariffs.  Upon completing the template, the Commission invited officials of the Utility Service Providers as well as selected media houses to discuss the new updates.

The use of the tariff proposal template enables the Commission to narrow down on the specific information required from the utility service providers for examination and subsequently arrive at a tariff decision. It also helps the utility service providers to effectively put together their proposals and meet presentation deadlines with the exact information and format required of them.
